If you owned a Sony Playstation games console in the late 1990s or early 2000s, there’s a strong chance you’d have played Gran Turismo.

Gran Turismo is a car racing game franchise that originally allowed players to earn their racing licenses, buy and sell used cars, and even modify them to beat the in-game competition.

It appealed to both car fans and gamers alike, having risen to become the Sony PlayStation’s best-selling exclusive video game franchise.

In 2017, creators of the saga, Polyphony Digital, released Gran Turismo Sport. It differed from previous titles in the franchise by focusing on hardcore simulation drivers with appropiate equipment.

It also removed and altered many aspects of earlier franchise entries’ gameplay, which alienated casual gamers, and fans of the original recipe.

That is all set to change. Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Digital, has told Japanese media that Gran Turismo 7 will move back to the original formula which first made it successful.

“While inheriting elements such as the [FIA] championship realised in [Gran Turismo] Sport, Gran Turismo 7 will return to the royal purpose of full volumes like [Gran Turismo] 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at present,” said Yamauchi.

Proof of Yamauchi’s statements can be seen in an official video on the PlayStation official YouTube channel.

In the gameplay clip, it shows the return of used cars and the tuning parts shop, which are both important historical aspects of the franchise.

An official release date for Gran Turismo 7 has yet to be announced, however Polyphony Digital claims the game will arrive sometime in 2021.
