As Gungrave G.O.R.E approaches its release later this year, I had a chance to chat with Mr. Yasuhiro Nightow, the legendary mangaka artist and the creative force behind the cult anti-hero, Grave, to answer some of my burning questions about this upcoming stylish third-person shooter on how he started drawing, how he sees Grave fit in with today’s other heroes, and who would win in a fight between Grave and Deadpool.

When did you first start drawing and writing?

My oldest memory is when I was around kindergarten age, and I had already drawn a comic with Snoopy as the main character. Back then I drew because I was so into it.

Who is Grave and what does he do?

He is a character that destroys everything in his path with a coffin and two pistols, made to be a stress reliever for all of you.

How did you come up originally with the character Grave?

I started out by imagining the video game screen. In that moment, his back was already turned towards us, and so I first started by designing his back.

How does it feel to have a new generation of gamers excited about playing the latest game, Gungrave G.O.R.E.?

I think that this is a crazy surprise that studio Iggymob is presenting for me and all of you, from the past to the present. I sincerely wish for this project to be successful.

What is your favorite Grave weapon?

It’s the rocket launcher he puts on his shoulder that’s fired with the classic and elegant desperado pose.

How do you think Grave fits in with today’s other anti-heroes and super beings?

I have a delusion that it will be a perfect fit for the Marvel VS Capcom series. Although it is not Marvel, nor Capcom. If it was Mortal Kombat, he is going to be torn into pieces in terrible ways, so it is a bit heartbreaking for me as a parent (laughter).

Who would win in a fight between Grave and Deadpool?

Grave calmly fights off Deadpool, who continues to pounce. But after tens of thousands of battles, Deadpool, who has the ability to recover perfectly, will eventually win. But the most important point is that nine out of ten times, Deadpool will just get bored of it in the middle of the fight.

Thank you to Mr. Yasuhiro Nightow for taking the time to talk with me about this exciting, upcoming game. Gungrave G.O.R.E is launching on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S later this year. To learn more, follow Gungrave G.O.R.E. on Twitter for the latest news and information.
