Snapchat Prompts Users to Review Their Connections for Safer Internet Day



Snapchat is about staying in touch with real friends, not building status via the size of your follower count, and in line with this, and as part of its Safer Internet Day push, Snap will soon prompt all users to review their connections via an in-app prompt, in order to remove those that they no longer want to be connected to, or share their updates with as they post.

As you can see here, Snapchat will add a new alert that prompts users to tap to review their friend list.

As explained by Snap:

“Friend Check Up prompts Snapchatters to look at their friend lists and make sure it’s all still people they want to be connected to. If there happens to be Snapchatters in their lists that they no longer want to be in contact with, they can easily and comfortably remove them.”

The approach is, in many ways, counter to the more common social media practice of emphasizing audience size as a means of influence and status. That’s lead to an unhealthy focus on vanity metrics, which even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has noted that he would change in his app, if he had his time over.

Snapchat has never displayed follower or Like counts, and has sought to keep communications between smaller, more intimate friend groups, as opposed to broadcasting to as many people as possible.

Though more recently, Snapchat has given some creators the option to display their subscriber counts, as a means to help them build audience.

That’s part of a broader shift to move the app in line with some more common creator functionalities, and isn’t exactly the same as like/follower counts on regular user profiles. But still, it does feel like a controversial shift for the platform. The logic of it makes sense, in trying to ensure creators can build their platform in the app, but it does run counter to the app’s long-standing focus on closer communities, even if that is less relevant for broad-reaching creators.

In addition to this, Snapchat has also announced a range of new partnerships to help provide more safety and guidance for users. 

  • Snap’s partnering with Connect Safely in the US and ChildNet in the UK on filters that will swipe up to additional safety resources from each organization. Snapchat has also co-authored a new guide to help users understand how to report any issues and debunk myths. 
  • Snapchat has also expanded its partnership with Crisis Text Line in order to make it even easier for Snapchatters to get in touch with a licensed counselor or find support.
  • Snapchat’s also partnering with The Trevor Project, the world’s largest crisis intervention and suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ young people, to better support LGBTQ youth mental health.
  • And lastly, Snap’s partnering with Mind Up and The Goldie Hawn Foundation on an online parent course that will be available to parents globally. “This free course will give parents basic tools and strategies to support their teens’ well-being, based on the latest science in the areas of neuroscience, mindfulness, social and emotional learning, and positive psychology.”

​Given its popularity among younger audiences, it’s important for Snapchat to ensure it provides more tools like this to support positive experiences within its app, while also giving people the tools they need to manage situations as they arise.

Friend Check-Up is a good tools in this respect, reminding users that they can, and should, review their connections list. By culling those you no longer want to stay in contact with, you can improve your in-app experience, and reduce the negative impacts of unwanted content exposure.

Instagram’s Testing New DM Labels to Help Manage Customer Interactions in the App

This could be handy – Instagram’s developing a new set of message labels for business accounts, which would make it easier to manage customer interactions in your DMs.

As you can see in this example, posted by Sachin Shah, Instagram’s looking to add five new labels for your IG Direct messages, in order to help businesses better manage their interactions in the app.

Those five labels are:

  • Flag
  • Booked
  • Ordered
  • Paid
  • Shipped

That could be particularly helpful for SMBs who don’t have access to more complex CRM features, providing a simple way to stay on top of critical interactions for your brand.

The new labels would add to Instagram’s existing business DM features, including welcome messages and saved replies. Businesses on Facebook can also add similar labels to their chats, though they’re slightly different in application to these more specific tags.

And with over a billion people messaging businesses across Meta’s apps every week, and Meta looking to provide more ways to maximize connection and opportunity through its platforms, it makes sense for IG to lean into these behaviors where it can, and provide more tools to facilitate commerce and business engagement.
