Clarksville water line break triggers CMCSS closure, restrictions

Published

on

A water transmission line break shuttered the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System on Tuesday, along with triggering mandatory water restrictions across Clarksville, officials said.

Clarksville Gas & Water notified officials about the issue Monday night, and the district announced the closure early Tuesday morning. Water outages and low water pressure are also tied to the break.

“We appreciate the Clarksville Gas & Water crews who are working diligently to make repairs and restore services,” the district said in a Facebook post. “Thank you all for your patience and understanding.”

Clarksville officials: What’s restricted, what to know as water line repair continues

The break is in a 30-inch water transmission line on Ashland City Road, a news release from the City of Clarksville said. Water outages will continue as crews work to repair the line. Updates will be shared publicly.

The city’s water is still safe to drink, but officials urged people to limit water for only necessary usage, like drinking, cooking, bathing and flushing toilets until repairs are completed. It is not necessary to fill tubs to store water.

“Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert to workers and their equipment positioned on the shoulder of Ashland City Road between Horace Crow Drive and Vista Lane,” the release said.

“Utility construction crews are onsite working diligently to make repairs as expediently as possible,” the city said in a news release. “However, it is undetermined when the work will be finished and water service fully restored.”

The release also listed several other mandatory water restrictions as repairs continue:

  • Restrict operation of ornamental fountains or ponds to initial filling except where necessary to support aquatic life or where such fountains or ponds are equipped with a recirculation system.
  • Prohibit recreational water use including use of faucets, hoses or hydrants, which uses water in such a manner as to allow run-off or other wastes.
  • Prohibit washing of any motor vehicle, motorbike, boat, trailer, airplane, or other vehicle. Vehicle washing may be done at any time on the immediate premises of a commercial car wash or commercial service station. Further, such washing may be exempted from these regulations if the health, safety, and welfare of the public is contingent upon frequent cleansing, such as garbage trucks and vehicles used to transport food and perishables.
  • Encourage further reduction in frequency of draining and refilling swimming pools.
  • Prohibit hosing off paved areas, buildings, windows or other surfaces.
