Death of young student announced by Texas Pike

The University of Texas at Austin Pi Kappa Alpha (Beta Mu chapter), aka Texas Pike, announced the death of undergraduate student Matt Shrake via Facebook on Thursday.

“Rest easy brother,” reads the post. It’s signed, “Phi Phi.”

It includes a series of photos of the late student’s life at the University of Texas, details of two Matt Shrake memorial services, and a celebration of Shrake as an individual.

The men of Texas Pike’s Beta Mu Chapter are “deeply saddened,” the organization’s recent Facebook post reads, “by the loss of our brother Matt Shrake.” It does not indicate a cause of death.

In his brief time at the university, it goes on, he made a “tremendous impact” on the Pike brotherhood. And across campus, too.

The fraternity offers their “deepest condolences” to the Shrake family, and “look forward to supporting them at Matt‘s funeral.”

Born 2003, Matt Shrake’s age was either 19 or 20 at time of death.

They also shared details of two memorial services

The first will take place on campus, at the main hall under the UT Tower. It will be a university-wide candlelight vigil service to “honor and celebrate” the late student.

Fellow students, family and friends are al welcome to attend. This service will take place on February 13, 2023 at 5:30pm.

A hometown service will follow three days later, on Thursday, February 16, at 3pm. Its location is the John Wesley United Methodist Church on Bermuda Dunes Drive, in Houston.

“Please join us in supporting the Shrake family,” Pike’s message concludes. “And honouring Matt’s memory.”

What does it say about Matt himself?

Matt Shrake, full name Matthew Garrett Shrake, started at the University of Texas in 2022, and was a member of the Beta Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha, aka Pike.

He died on January 30, 2023.

He “embodied all four characteristics of a Pike,” the organization’s post reads. These being that he was a scholar, a leader, an athlete, and a gentleman. 

It goes further, to describe him as a “ray of sunshine” who would “light up any room with his infectious smile and laughter.”
