‘Mickey Mouse Car’: Fiat Revives the Topolino Moniker as an EV Quadricycle

In the era of electric vehicles, manufacturers are finding lucrative ways to revive old monikers on an EV platform. Fiat has done it again with the new Topolino, sprouting a modern-day Citroen Ami rival which is hard to classify as a true ‘car’. Yep, the new Topolino is a quadricycle and has a length of just 2,410mm which means it is even shorter than the Fiat 500. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

The ‘Topolino’ moniker is etched in history as the ‘Mickey Mouse’ car and the new one is cute as well. In terms of styling references, it draws heavily from the older Fiat 500s and certainly has an adorable face when compared to the rakish Citroen Ami on which it is based. Everywhere you look, the new Topolino is retro with its classic wheel covers, round headlamps, and canvas top.

As you might have noticed, there aren’t any doors, instead, you get, erm, a rope as a door handle. The interior is beyond minimalistic and does not even get air conditioning, although, it features a smartphone holder along with an optional rack for luggage.

Like the Citroen Ami, there’s a 6kW electric motor and a 5.5 kWh battery pack that means you won’t be winning drag races here as you can expect it to top out at under 30 mph. You can expect a range of about 75 km per charge though. The new Topolino is targeted at first-time car buyers and also at 14-16-year-olds who can drive a quadricycle in certain European countries.

According to Fiat, this modern-day interpretation of a loveable classic is aimed at bringing ‘la dolce vita’ to the city streets. If priced well, expect it to sell in good numbers like the Citroen Ami in European markets.
