Quiz – how much games consoles cost at launch from Atari 2600 to PlayStation 5
Of course, new hardware means top-end prices with both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X coming in at a hefty £450 each, though cheaper variants – the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (£360) and Xbox Series S (£250) – are also available.
Though there’s no doubt the price of consoles is creeping up, so is inflation, so what seems like some of the most expensive gaming hardware ever may actually be quite a good deal compared to previous generations.
To prove this, NetVoucherCodes looked at the UK launch prices of dozens of consoles going right back to the Atari 2600 in 1977 to see just how much they cost then, and how much that would be today accounting for inflation.
The digital Argos catalogues were used to find the pricing for each machine, with inflation figured out using the Bank Of England’s calculator.
To make it a little bit more interactive, we’ve put together a quiz featuring 21 of the best-known consoles from the past to see if you can guess how much they cost at launch.
Whether you guess right or wrong (or maybe you know the answers!), we’ve included a bit of information about each machine along with how much those launch prices would be in 2020 pounds sterling.
By the end, you probably won’t feel too bad about how much you paid for you PS5 or Xbox Series X!
