As you know, there’s no boundary to creativity when it comes to smoking weed. The only limit is your imagination! From making pipes out of apples or soda cans to joint creations that need more expertise like the scorpion joint or the cross (who doesn’t remember that scene from Pineapple Express?), you can smoke your weed in so many ways it’s insane.
Right now though, we’re focusing on the baseball bat joint. Although it might take some practice to perfect, this doobie will certainly up your cannabis game and impress your friends.
What is a Baseball Bat Joint?
The baseball bat joint, sometimes also known as a cone joint, is a joint that has a small base that eventually flares up into a larger-diameter tip, giving it that ‘baseball bat’ look that has inspired its name.
Although the jury is still out on whether or not this is better than smoking a regular, cigarette-shaped joint, the baseball joint will surely gain you some props with your friends and makes the whole act of rolling one up a true art form.
We’re here to help you out with rolling your first baseball bat joint. Follow our tutorial and you’ll be an expert in no time.
What You Need
- Your favorite strain of dry flower
- Rolling paper of your choice
- Filter tips (bought or homemade)
- A grinder (unless your flower is already ground)
- A flat surface to roll (rolling trays are great for this!)
Here is everything you need to get started with your next baseball bat joint:
Step One: Grind Your Flower
Before you roll one up, you’ll want to make sure your weed is finely ground, because there’s nothing more frustrating than getting to work and having your paper punctured by stems or larger buds.
You’ll want to clean your weed too, getting rid of any stems that’ll be harder to grind and not worth the trouble.
The best way to crumble up your cannabis is to use a grinder, besides, their literal job is to make sure your flower is finely ground and ready to place into your favorite smoking device or rolled up into a joint.
Step Two: Filter Time
Not everyone likes putting filters in their joints, but they sure help with stability, make sure your weed stays put and gives you smoother hits.
You might buy ready-made filters, so feel free to skip this step. If you don’t it’s pretty simple to make one yourself.
You’ll want to use a material thicker than paper, whether that be thin cardboard, a flyer, a folder, index cards, heck, you can even use an old business card you have no use for.
Next, you’ll want to cut it into a rectangular shape and create a small ‘W’ shape by folding it one way and then the other, leaving enough room with the rest of the material to wrap it around itself and turn it into a filter.
Next, start wrapping it around, making sure it’s not too tight so that the smoke can easily come through, but tight enough to keep weed from falling out. Once you’re done, that’s it: you’ve got a filter.
Step Three: Assemble
If your paper doesn’t already have a crease down the middle, fold it in half to create one.
Now, line up your filter at the end of your rolling paper, making sure it’s aligned with the bottom.
Next, you’ll want to add the ground-up herb to the paper, using the crease as a guide. Add more cannabis to the opposite end of the filter than the side towards the filter, so there’s more weed on the top than at the bottom.
You’ll know you’ve done it right when the shape of the ground weed starts resembling a baseball bat, with more flower on the top and less at the bottom, but not too much to be un-rollable.
Step Four: Rolling
With a careful and deliberate movement, you’ll want to gently pick up your unrolled joint and start rolling it between your thumb and index finger, compressing the flower while you do so and making sure it all stays in its place.
Next, hold your joint by the filter’s end and use your thumb to carefully slide across the joint while tightening it, making sure it keeps up its baseball bat shape and is tight all around. Once you’ve got the paper all rolled up, lick across the glue strip and continue to roll, sticking the glue end to the paper and making sure it’s compressed and sealed.
Step Five: Finer Details
Once you’ve completed the last step, pack down the weed on the open end of the joint, using something like the back end of a pencil or anything else that’ll do the job.
You’ll want to tap it lightly on the flat surface (filter-end down), to further compact it and add more weed if necessary, repeating the step until your joint is filled to the top with just enough room to close it up on top.
You’re basically done, don’t give up. Now, just twist the remaining paper material left on the top, pressing and turning it until it’s all closed up and ready to go.

Step Six: Enjoy Your Baseball Bat Joint!
You’re ready to enjoy your baseball bat joint! Now all you need to do is light it up, burning away the tip until you’re left with an open-ended tip that will make sure your weed burns evenly.
Light it up, take a hit, share with friends, and enjoy. You’ll sure to knock it out of the park with this one.
