ChatGPT can now make animated GIFs with OpenAI’s Images 2.6

OpenAI is adding animated GIF creation to ChatGPT with its new image model, Images 2.6. Users can make a GIF by describing what they want or by uploading a photo.

After ChatGPT creates a GIF, users can change its speed, view and edit individual frames, and share the result. Before this update, ChatGPT could not create a GIF in a single step.

Images 2.6 is also designed to create images faster. OpenAI is rolling it out to ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop, and mobile.

Developers can use two new image models through OpenAI’s API. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare is designed for speed, while GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst is designed for image quality.

OpenAI says people now create more than 4 billion images each week using ChatGPT and its API. That is up from 3 billion in September. The figure includes all image creation, not just GIFs.

The update comes months after OpenAI shut down Sora, its AI video app. OpenAI has continued to add new features to its image tools, including Images 2.0, which launched in April.
