Tiny Tasmanian rental in Huon Valley slammed for charging $175 per week

A rental listing has been slammed for charging $175 per week for a tiny freestanding room in Tasmania’s Huon Valley.

The cabin near Cygnet, 54km south of Hobart, boasts a gorgeous view — but locals are calling the price tag extortionate and a grim reflection of the rental crisis gripping the state.

“Small fully insulated cabin with heat and power. Shared Kitchen and bathroom. $175 week!” the rental listing on Facebook Marketplace said.

“On a rural bush setting with walking tracks, creeks and magnificent views. Just three-minute drive from Cygnet or 25-minute walk. Genuine inquiries only. Thank you.”

But the listing was quickly ridiculed online, and likened to pet kennels and coops as well as outhouses and saunas due to its diminutive dimensions.

“This tiny wooden box is barely wider than a two-seater couch,” one Hobart man Tweeted, referring to the 2300mm x 1950mm fold-out bed pictured in the cabin, which was also for sale.

“(It) has no bathroom, no kitchen, and is a 25-minute walk from Cygnet.

“If you had tried that on as little as five years ago, someone would have tossed you directly into the Tasman Sea.”

“Seen better dog kennels,” one person commented.

“Time to boot Rover to the pound and do a Dulux reno of the kennel,” another said.

“My chook shed is bigger than that,” another said.

“Looks like a sauna,” one person said. “Is it a dunny?” another said.

“At least in prison you take a piss inside,” another said.

7NEWS.com.au has contacted the property owner and the Tenants Union of Tasmania for comment.

Just 17km north in Huonville, the median rental price for a house is $470 per week, and $380 per week for a unit, according to Real Estate Investar.

It reported that more than 2336 people rent their homes in the Huon Valley, and noted that just 39 rentals were currently listed.

Corelogic’s latest quarterly report cites a 4.7 per cent increase in Hobart rental prices in the last 12 months to March.

Tasmanian Labor MP Rebecca White said earlier this year: “Tasmanians who are doing it toughest in the middle of a health, housing and cost of living crisis are also being exposed to the highest rents of any state at the ‘affordable’ end of the market.”
