Google Invests More Money in AI Company Anthropic

Google is giving more than $1 billion to an AI company called Anthropic. This news comes from the Financial Times.

Earlier this year, news said that Anthropic was trying to get $2 billion from investors. A company called Lightspeed Venture Partners was leading that deal. The value of Anthropic is now about $60 billion.

Google’s new $1 billion is separate from that deal.

What is Anthropic?

Anthropic is a company that makes AI, just like OpenAI. OpenAI made ChatGPT, a very popular AI tool. Anthropic competes with OpenAI in making powerful AI models.

Anthropic did not want to comment on Google’s new investment. Google also did not answer questions right away.

Big Investments in AI

Google had already promised $2 billion to Anthropic before this new money. Another big company, Amazon, has given $8 billion to Anthropic.

Anthropic makes money by selling AI services. They sell directly to customers and also through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Building AI is very expensive and needs smart engineers and powerful computers.

The AI Race

Microsoft supports OpenAI, which started the AI race when it launched ChatGPT in 2022. Because ChatGPT became very popular, OpenAI got $6.6 billion in new money last year. Now, OpenAI could be worth $157 billion.

The competition between AI companies is growing fast. Many big tech companies are investing billions to build better AI.
