Google Confirms March 2026 Core Update Is Complete

Google has finished its March core update. This update started on March 27 and was completed on April 8, 2026. The news came from the Google Search Status Dashboard, which noted that the rollout was done by 6:12 AM PDT on April 8. The whole process lasted for 12 days, which is quicker than the previous core update in December 2025, which took 18 days.

What Google Said About This Update

Google describes the March 2026 core update as a regular update meant to show more relevant and satisfying content to users. Unlike other updates, Google did not publish a blog post explaining specific goals or give new guidelines with this update.

Core updates generally make broad changes to how Google ranks pages. They do not target specific sites or content types. Instead, they re-evaluate overall quality, which can lead to changes in how pages rank.

Three Updates In One Month

March was a busy month for Google with three confirmed updates. The March core update was the last of these updates. Earlier in the month, the February Discover core update finished on February 27, taking 22 days to roll out. This was the first time Google labeled an update as “Discover-only.”

Additionally, a March 2026 spam update was completed in under 20 hours on March 24-25, marking it as the quickest spam update on record. The core update followed just two days later on March 27.

Roger Montti from Search Engine Journal noted that the sequence of the spam update followed by the core update might not have been an accident. He suggested that stopping spam is part of the overall quality check during a core update, comparing it to “clearing the table” before making changes.

How The Rollout Compared To Recent Core Updates

This March update was one of the quickest in the past five core updates. The only update that finished faster was the December 2024 update.

Why This Matters

With the rollout complete, you can now measure how your site performed before and after the update using Search Console. Google recommends waiting at least a week after the update is finished before analyzing your data.

You should compare the weeks before March 27 to the time after April 8. Remember, the spam update ended on March 25, so any changes from March 24-27 could be from either update. A drop in rankings does not mean your site broke any rules; it simply reflects a change in how Google evaluates content quality across the internet.

Looking Ahead

Google is expected to continue releasing smaller updates that are not publicly announced between bigger core updates. In December, Google updated its information to confirm that smaller core updates happen regularly.

Keep an eye out for these updates, as they can also affect how your site ranks.
