Google Denies Report About Ads Launching on Gemini in 2026
Google Responds to Claims About Ads Coming to Gemini in 2026
Google has publicly denied a recent report that said it plans to introduce ads to its Gemini AI chatbot in 2026. The report, published by Adweek, claimed that Google informed some advertising clients about these ad plans.
What the Report Said
In the Adweek article, writer Trishla Ostwal mentioned that Google representatives had conversations with at least two advertising clients. They hinted that ads would be added to Gemini in 2026. However, the clients who shared this information chose to remain anonymous. They noted that details about how the ads would look and cost were not clear. Furthermore, Google had not provided any prototypes or specific information about the ads.
The report also mentioned that this advertising plan would be separate from Google’s current AI-powered search experience, known as AI Mode.
Google’s Denial
Dan Taylor, Google’s Vice President of Global Ads, quickly responded to the report on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He called the report inaccurate and stated, “There are no ads in the Gemini app and there are no current plans to change that.”
Additionally, the official Google AdsLiaison account supported Taylor’s statement. The account emphasized that Gemini will not feature ads and indicated that while ads are being tested in AI Mode, they do not exist in the Gemini app.
Logan Kilpatrick, a member of Google’s Gemini team, also expressed appreciation for Taylor’s clarification by saying, “thanks for clarifying!!”
Google’s Current Ad Strategy
Even though the Gemini app is not expected to have ads, Google is monetizing other AI features. This year, Google started displaying ads in AI Overviews and is working to expand this feature to more English-speaking countries. Google is also testing ads within AI Mode.
Why This Is Important
The topic of how AI chatbots will make money is becoming more significant as these technologies become widely used. Tech companies like Google and OpenAI are under pressure to generate income from costly AI projects. Recently, code found in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Android app suggested they might also be considering an advertising framework. However, OpenAI has not confirmed any such plans.
For now, Google assures users that they will not see ads in the Gemini chatbot. It remains to be seen if this policy will change as the AI landscape progresses.
