Ranking Factors Defined
We use a precise “ranking factor” definition to give you confidence in the information we provide.
Before we call something a ranking factor, we generally look for an official statement that a factor is given weight by the algorithms when deciding on SERP rankings – preferably from Google or a Google employee.
In those cases, we will say “confirmed” ranking factor.
The feature or concept in question must be used currently to pass muster. And yes, some elements were previously ranking factors but aren’t anymore.
In cases where there isn’t a statement from Google, it’s challenging to determine whether something is a ranking factor. If Google hasn’t confirmed it directly, we’ll walk through the evidence, but it’s unlikely to get a “confirmed” rating.
When evaluating whether something will impact your SEO, look for confirmation from Google first. Many studies and experiments are floating around, but as you’ll see in the book, they’re not always reliable.
