Zuckerberg Announces Launch of First AI Data Supercluster in 2026
Meta’s First AI Data Supercluster Going Online in 2026
Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, is investing a lot of money in artificial intelligence (AI). CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the world’s first AI supercluster will go online in 2026. This supercluster will cost “hundreds of billions of dollars” to build.
What is a Supercluster?
A supercluster is a powerful data center that can handle extensive amounts of information and train AI models. Meta’s supercluster will be named Prometheus, and it will be located in New Albany, Ohio. It will use gas turbines for energy.
Huge Investments in AI
Meta has raised its spending plan for 2025 to between $64 billion and $72 billion, mainly to build more data centers and hire more AI experts. Just a year ago, this spending was around $40 billion. In June, Meta also invested $114 billion in Scale AI, hiring CEO Alexandr Wang to lead their AI efforts.
Powering Many Homes
The first supercluster will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt. This amount of power can supply around 800,000 homes for an entire year! Zuckerberg believes that this facility will help Meta develop advanced AI and work with the best researchers in the field.
More Superclusters in the Future
Meta plans to build another supercluster called Hyperion in Richland Parish, Louisiana. This one can eventually grow to 5 gigawatts, taking until 2030 to complete. Zuckerberg mentioned that this project alone is very large, covering a significant area like Manhattan.
Competition in AI
Meta wants to reduce its dependence on other companies, including Apple and Google, for AI technology. They also want to compete with other big names in AI like Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Amazon-backed Anthropic. Meta launched its Llama 4 AI models earlier this year, but these didn’t get as much attention as expected from developers.
Looking Ahead
Meta is optimistic that its Superintelligence Labs will generate new revenue through various AI applications, including advertising tools and smart glasses. As a sign of investor confidence, Meta’s stock rose by 1.01% recently.
In conclusion, Meta’s plan for the first AI supercluster represents a big step forward in AI technology and shows their commitment to leading in this field.
