10 Hacks Every DuckDuckGo User Should Know

DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine that focuses on your privacy. It doesn’t track your searches like Google does. However, there are many other helpful features you can use. Here are 10 hacks to improve your DuckDuckGo experience:

1. Turn Off AI Features for a Simpler Search

DuckDuckGo offers some AI tools that might not be for everyone. If you want a simpler search, go to the settings page and find the AI Features section. Turn off Search Assist and Duck.ai to stop getting AI-related results.

2. Use AI Chatbots Anonymously

If you’re curious about AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude but want to keep your privacy, DuckDuckGo allows you to use them anonymously. Visit Duck.ai and choose the chatbot you want to try. You can use it without creating an account, though there is a daily limit.

3. Use “Bangs” to Search Other Websites

You can use special shortcuts, called “bangs,” to search other sites directly from DuckDuckGo. For example:

  • Add !g to your search to use Google.
  • Use !w for Wikipedia.
  • Type !r for Reddit searches.
Check out the full list of bangs here.

4. Hide AI-Generated Images

To focus on real images, you can filter out AI-generated pictures. Go to DuckDuckGo settings and enable Hide AI-Generated Images under the AI Features section. This filter helps in reducing AI images in your search results.

5. Block Unwanted Websites

If you find low-quality sites in your results, you can block them easily. Click on the three dots next to a search result, then select Block this site from all results. You can manage your blocked sites under DuckDuckGo settings.

6. Remove Ads for a Cleaner Search

Want a cleaner search experience? Go to DuckDuckGo settings and turn off Advertisements. You can also disable other prompts about DuckDuckGo products to make your homepage less cluttered.

7. See More Information in Search Results

If you need more information about your search results, you can change the max snippet length. Go to DuckDuckGo settings > Appearance > Max Snippet Length and set it to 5 lines for more details.

8. Shorten URLs Easily

DuckDuckGo has a built-in URL shortener. Simply type “shorten [URL]” in the search bar. For example: “shorten [your URL here].” DuckDuckGo will give you a shortened link right away.

9. Protect Your Email Address

When signing up for new accounts, it’s safer to use different email addresses. DuckDuckGo provides an Email Protection service that creates unique email addresses for you. This way, if a website sells your data, they will only have a fake email, not your real one.

10. Find Keyboard Shortcuts with “Cheatsheet”

Need a quick reference for keyboard shortcuts? Type “cheatsheet [app name]” in DuckDuckGo. For example, search for “cheatsheet Excel” to get a list of useful Excel shortcuts quickly.
