Brian Wallace On Good vs. Bad Infographics & The Process To Make Infographics

In part one we spoke about how Brian Wallace of NowSourcing got into infographics, how it is not just about links but much more and some cool scores he had with them. In part two, we talk about measuring the success of infographics and other uses for infographics.

I tried to get Brian to shame some infographics and he said he use to have a blog that did just that but now he doesn’t want to do that anymore. Instead, he gave us a list of what not to do with infographics.

Do Not Do For Infographics:

  • Roadmap infographics are overdone
  • Timeline infographics are also overdone and often boring
  • The header of the infographic is not thought enough about
  • Going the distance with infographics is often not done
  • Embed codes

What Makes A Great Infographic:

Brain explained that it is more about putting the story before the data because you can always run a survey later to get the data. You must start with a story to have a great infographic,. You can also always make your data say anything you want it. So first start with the stories people want to read, by using maybe Google Trends, Google’s people also ask, ask journalists, see what people are writing or repurpose your content or someone else’s content. You need to make sure you pull in interest from both the right and left side of the brain.

Process To Make An Infographic:

Brain then walked us through the process to make an infographic and it starts with ideation which is that one headline that you want to communicate with the infographic. Then the seed of the idea spreads out to the research team, where the research team does the blueprint, which is part narrative and data and weave it together. Then it goes to design from there but that is very subjective, so they try to fit the brand and also design it in a way so it catches. Then it gets Implemented and then tested and then is gets promoted out.

In short, NowSourcing makes ideas simple, visualize and influential.

Billions Of Google goo.gl URLs To 404 In The Future

Google announced that it will stop serving the Google URL Shortener, so any URL that was set up to redirect using goo.gl, which Google stopped supporting adding new ones back in 2019, will also stop serving.

Starting August 23, 2024, goo.gl links will start displaying an interstitial page for a percentage of existing links to notify users that the link will no longer be supported after August 25, 2025 prior to navigating to the original target page. Then after August 25, 2025, the link will then 404 and not redirect to the right destination URL.

So any redirects you have pointing to your site using goo.gl Google’s service, will die and not be counted.

As Glenn Gabe noted on X, that means billions of URLs on the web will simply vanish and begin to 404. Glenn shared how Majestic knows of 3.6 billion goo.gl links 36 billion historical links in its database.

Google wrote:

Over time the percentage of links that will show the interstitial page will increase until the shutdown date. This interstitial page should help you track and adjust any affected links that you will need to transition as part of this change. We will continue to display this interstitial page until the shutdown date after which all links served will return a 404 response.

Note that the interstitial page may cause disruptions in the current flow of your goo.gl links. For example, if you are using other 302 redirects, the interstitial page may prevent the redirect flow from completing correctly. If you’ve embedded social metadata in your destination page, the interstitial page will likely cause these to no longer show up where the initial link is displayed. For this reason, we advise transitioning these links as soon as possible.

Note: In the event the interstitial page is disrupting your use cases, you can suppress it by adding the query param “si=1” to existing goo.gl links.

Is this a pain for any of you? I personally won’t be asking anyone with goo.gl links to update them for me.

Google said that the next Google core update should be coming in the coming weeks. Google had some search ranking volatility, an unconfirmed Google update, around July 18th. Google said it will host more creator meetings. Google Search Notes is coming to an end this month. Google is testing AI Overviews for Workspace accounts and in the UK. Google barely shows Reddit and Quora in the AI Overviews anymore. Google may have an AI generated content score for sites. A public company lowered its earnings forecasts because of the Google site reputation abuse policy. Google said removing your disavow list should not make you worry. Google URL shortener links will stop serving in a year, resulting in billions of links and redirects to all 404. Google is testing AI-organized local search results pages. Google may be rolling out more 3D and AR images in Search. Google Merchant Center Next is rolling out to all merchants. Merchant Center Next now also supports supplemental feeds. Google knowledge panels are testing store rating reviews. Google Search chat feature for local businesses no longer works. Google Ads changed broad match to intent match in Japan. That was the search news this week at the Search Engine Roundtable.
