Daily Search Forum Recap: May 23, 2022

Published

on

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google is into its grid layout, testing ads in that layout and also testing it on desktop search. Google does not yet have the inclusive markup schema for image skin tones. Google said rich results are not impacting by your server slowing down. Google Search Console seems like it will change “coverage” to pages” in the side bar menu. Plus we have a vlog out with James Pate, a smart SEO at IBM.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • New Google News Trial Being Tested

Google is testing a new version of the Google News portal. I am able to replicate it in some browsers, but not all. The message at the top says “you’re using a trail version of Google News.” The news portal looks much more news like and is a bit refreshing from the current version of Google News.

  • Google Search Tests Grid Layout For Ads

Google is now also testing that grid layout for ads, not just for desktop results. Yes, Google launched on mobile a new visual grid layout. And now Google is testing it as a new ad format and on desktop search, which we covered earlier this morning.
  • Google Search Grid Format Visual Design On Desktop

It looks like Google is testing the more visual grid format design that was officially launched on mobile, now on desktop Google Search results. This typically comes up for product queries and such and it is now being tested on Google desktop search.

  • Google: Slower Server Response Time Wont Lead To Rich Results Drop

Google’s John Mueller said that “rich results would not drop due to a slower response from the server.” He said this on Twitter when someone said they “lost 90% of our Recipe Rich Cards” at the same time as a “slower server response time.”

  • Google Search Console To Change Coverage Report To Pages Report?

Remember the new video page indexing report Google demonstrated at Google I/O? Well, I didn’t pick up on this but Google may be renaming the “coverage” report to “pages” report. If you look at the screenshot Google shared at Google I/O, the coverage report was renamed to “pages.”

  • Google Inclusive Schema For Image Search Monk Skin Tone Scale Not Here Yet

One of the announcements at Google I/O was a new way to filter image results by skin tones. Part of that announcement, that I embedded in my coverage, was Google saying content creators will be able to use “inclusive schema to label their content with attributes like skin tone, hair color and hair texture.”
  • Vlog #174: James Pate On SEO At IBM & Using Airtable For Managing Enterprise SEO Data

James Pate is the Technical SEO Manager at IBM, IBM has a whole group of respected and well known SEOs. I’ve spoken with Patrick Stox while he was at IBM, I also spoke with Tanu Javeri at IBM’s NYC offices a while back. So this is the third IBM SEO I’ve interviewed…

  • Two Disco Balls At The Google Dublin Office

We have seen some of the Google offices had disco balls hanging from the ceiling but here are two disco balls on the floor of the Google Dublin office. I guess they had some wild post-COVID party at t

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google’s site reputation abuse policy is still not algorithmically enforced. Google Search can now index EPUB formats. There is a neat place to follow all the embarrassing Google AI Overview examples. Google Analytics 4 adds real-time metrics in the past 5 minutes. Google Search has new profiles for looking at reviews and notes. And I posted thew weekly SEO video recap.

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Microsoft Bing was offline for a while today, taking down third-party sites like ChatGPT Search, DuckDuckGo and even its ad products. Google is testing special treatments for Reddit results in search. Google is testing from sources across the web without images. Google is testing replacing related search with people also search for. Google Ads has a referral program, not sure if that is new. Google updated its robots.txt parser code in GitHub.

Daily Search Forum Recap: May 22, 2024

Published

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google Marketing Live was yesterday and we covered all of the search ad announcements including that ads are coming to AI Overviews. I am seeing a possible Google ranking update, unconfirmed of course. Google and Bing both recommend you upgrade to WordPress 6.5 because it supports native lastmod elements in the sitemap files. There is this weird surge in Google Search Console performance reports for product snippets. Bing is testing search tag filters. Apple Maps may mark a business closed due to missing an address and/or business hours.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Google Search Ranking Volatility Spike Around May 22

After a few days of calm Google weather, we are now seeing a spike in volatility, fluctuations and SEO chatter around Google search ranking movement. It is somewhat early on but I am seeing both a spike in SEOs noticing ranking movement and many of the tools are showing a spike in volatility.

  • Google Ads In AI Overviews, AI Shopping Ads, Brand Profile Ads & More AI Ad Tools

Google Marketing Live was yesterday, and the Google Ad team announced a ton of new AI formats, new ad tools, and changes to the Google Ads platform that are coming soon. The big items for me are ads in AI Overviews, new AI Shopping Ads, Brand Profile ads, and more AI tools to help you create your ads.

  • Unusual Surge In Google Search Console Product Snippets Search Performance

Google Search Console may have another data bug, maybe, this time with product snippets. If you look at your Search Performance report, then filter by search appearance for product snippets, you will likely see a surge in impressions and clicks over the past few days.

  • Google & Bing Say Upgrade To WordPress 6.5 To Gain Lastmod Sitemap Support

Google and Bing are recommending that those on WordPress to upgrade to version 6.5 because 6.5 now supports lastmod dates in the sitemap files natively. In fact, Fabrice Canel from Bing says this is a “game-changer.”

  • Bing Search Testing Tag Filters

Microsoft is testing a way to filter your Bing Search results based on tags. The tag filter is showing up for some searchers via a tab that you can click on via the right side of the page that will expand and show you tag filter options.

  • Apple Maps Listing Permanently Closed Over Missing Business Hours & Address

Did you know that Apple can mark a business listing within Appel Maps / Apple Business Connect, as permanently closed if that business listing is missing the business hours and business address and/or if the business hours and address do not match what is on the business’s website or other local listings (like on Yelp, Google Maps, etc)?

  • Google Golf Clubs

Here is a photo from a Google event named “Grow with Google” where there are Google branded gold clubs in this backdrop. You can see them in the golf bag on the right of the photo.
