Daily Search Forum Recap: May 20, 2024

Published

on

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google said it is working on surfacing more heartful helpful content, after no sites seemed to have recovered from the last helpful content update. Danny Sullivan said he speaks directly to engineers working on Google Search. Google doesn’t let you turn off AI Overviews, but Bing lets you turn off its AI responses. Google Notes says it is ending the labs feature soon but Google may bring comments to notes.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Google Working On Surfacing More Content That Comes From The Heart

Last week we reported how Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, said how they are looking for ways to better promote sites that were hit by that helpful content update in September. Now, over the weekend, John Mueller from Google added, “the team working on this is explictly evaluating how sites can / will improve in Search for the next update.”

  • Bing Lets You Turn Off AI Responses But Google Doesn’t Let You Turn Off AI Overviews

Google has been rolling out AI Overviews in its search results since last week and more and more searchers are super unhappy that there is no way to turn off the AI Overviews. Michael Schechter, a Vice President at Microsoft, shared a screenshot in Bing, on how you can turn off Copilot responses in Bing Search with the click of a button.

  • Danny Sullivan: We Speak Directly To Engineers Working On Google Ranking Systems

Google was asked where Google’s Danny Sullivan and John Mueller get their information from when responding to search and ranking-related questions. Sullivan responded directly to the engineers who code those ranking systems at Google.

  • Google Says Notes On Search Now Ends Soon

Google has updated the Google Search Labs to say that Notes on Search now “ends soon.” As a reminder, last November Google rolled out as a labs the Notes feature in Google Search and Google Discover.

  • Comments To Notes In Google Search?

Google may be bringing comments to the Notes on Google Search (and Discover) feature. Notes on Search came last November as a labs feature in Google Search and Google Discover. Google recently tested a new button for the notes feature in Search. Now Google may be testing comments on Notes.

  • NYC Bring Your Child To Work Day At Google NYC

Google held its annual bring your child to work day at the Google New York City office. This was back in late April and I found some cute photos of kids at Google doing face painting, gaming, balloons and more.

Google Search Console Performance Reports Catching Up But Not Finished Yet

Published

on

Google Report Analytics

As you know, Google Search Console’s performance reports were significantly delayed this week. But as of this morning, the reports are beginning to catch up. Google said last night it would take them “at least 2-3 days to fully catch up” and reprocess the data. So if you are seeing weird data, look away and come back on Monday.

Google posted last night on X, “The fresh data for this report is currently being reprocessed, and is likely to take at least 2-3 days to catch up fully. We’ll let you know here when it’s fully resolved. Thanks for your patience.”

Google specifically mentioned the “fresh data for this report” is “being reprocessed” and that will take time. So if you see the fresh data or even older data from this week, being wonky – it is related to this.

Update at 7:45pm ET: We may be back, I see last updated 3 hours ago now:

3 Hours

Here are those posts:

As of this morning, it looks like the reporting began to catch up a lot – but it is far from done. I am seeing about 28 hours, the worst it got was 96 or 97 hours delayed but now we are at about 28-29 hours, so it is catching up but it is not done yet.

Many are noticing that the “Fresh data” part is showing a huge decline in data, which is worrying some. Here are some examples:

This seems to be directly related to Google Search Console reprocessing the data.

John Mueller of Google said on LinkedIn about the fresh data, “I’d check the posts at Google Search Central :-)” That is the post I embedded above about it going to take 2-3 days to fully catch up.

I know many of you are eager to see your data for the week, but looking at it now, when it might change in a day or two, will cause even more work for you.

So I guess wait until Monday to do any reporting…

Update: Google posted this a few hours later, “The data for this report is still catching up and being reprocessed. In the meantime, you might see a fresh data point with partial data. This is expected with data recoveries, and the partial data will be replaced with final data. Thanks for your patience.”

Forum discussion at X.

Daily Search Forum Recap: July 3, 2024

Published

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

The Google Search Console delays do not mean there is an unconfirmed core update rolling out, Google said. Google does not show those reporting delays in the Google Search Status Dashboard. There is an update zero click study from Rand Fishkin. Google is testing current styles carousel in Google Search. And Google Ads brand exclusions won’t prevent your ad from showing random firms, yet.

Daily Search Forum Recap: July 2, 2024

Published

on

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google Search Console has some reporting delays, Google is working on a fix. Google Ads has a new setting to declare if a political ad is altered or synthetic (AI) that must be used. Google Ads will allow fantasy sports and lottery courier ads. Google Local Service Ads now show in the mobile business finder. Google Merchant Center updated how it uses your conversion data. Microsoft Advertising launched new property center section. And I posted the big Google Webmaster Report for July.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • July 2024 Google Webmaster Report

This month we had Google June 2024 spam update roll out over a seven-day period. We had a few other unconfirmed Google search ranking updates as well, listed below. Let’s not forget yet another Google indexing bug after the core update was announced…

  • Google Search Console Working To Fix Search Performance Delays & Latency

Google has confirmed it is working to fix the delays and latency issues with the Google Search Console Performance reports. This happens to the performance reports and often other reports in Google Search Console every now and then and generally Google is able to get it to catch up over time.

  • Google Ads Gains New Checkbox: Altered Or Synthetic Content

As you may remember, Google Ads requires political ads to disclose if the content, images or other assets in any way used synthetic content (i.e. AI content). Now Google Ads seems to be adding a checkbox for these ads to check off if these ads use “Altered or synthetic content.”

  • Google Merchant Center Conversion Data Usage Changes

Google sent out notices via email to Google Merchant Center merchants about a change to how Google collects and uses conversion data that you share with Google. Google said it may use that data for new reporting and also for ways to improve Google Search experiences and services.

  • Google Local Service Ads Now On Mobile Local Business Finder

Google is now showing Local Service Ads directly in the mobile version of the Google local business finder interface in Google Search. We know Google is showing LSAs now on Google Maps for iOS but now we are also seeing it on this surface.

  • Google Ads To Allow Fantasy Sports & Lottery Couriers Ads In Many States

Google has posted that it begin to accept and run ads for Daily Fantasy Sports and lottery couriers in many states within the United States. This change goes into affect on July 15, 2024 and advertisers must apply for certification.

  • Microsoft Advertising Property Center & Lodging Campaigns Expands

Microsoft announced Property Center for Microsoft Advertising’s lodging campaigns. This should make it easier for you to manage your Hotel Price Ads and Property Promotion Ads for your hotel or vacation rental property.

  • Google Fashion Summit In Brazil

Google held some sort of Google Fashion Summit in the Brazil office. I spotted some photos of it on Instagram from Ana Elisa who wrote, “Today was a day to visit Google and share some of @santa_lolla strategies to stay relevant on the platform. Only proud of this team.”
