Google Says HTTPS Is Not A Requirement To Rank In Google Search

Google’s John Mueller was asked if Google still ranks sites that are on HTTP (not over HTTPS), i.e. insecure sites. John said yes, being on HTTPS is not a requirement to rank in Google Search he explained.

The question asked was “do you still RANK non-https sites in 2022?” John responded on Twitter saying, “Sure. There are a lot of great & old websites on HTTP. It’s not a requirement to be on HTTPS.”

Here are those tweets:

While it might be rare to see HTTP-only sites in Google Search, it can happen. The reason it is rare to see HTTP sites is that most active and maintained sites are on HTTPS, not because Google won’t rank them.

Yes, there is a minor HTTPS ranking boost in Google Search.

Google Bard Gains Images

Google Bard Images

As Google announced a week or so ago, Bard now can show images in the responses. Jack Krawczyk said on Twitter that you can “click an image to see the source for each one,” and that “Bard includes images in relevant responses and also when you specifically ask for them, starting with English.”

Google Bard can now bring in images from Google Search and you can also ask Bard for images directly. Plus, Google Bard will show a source for each image.

I tried it myself and the first two requests were pretty solid. Well, okay, it lied, I am not thin, nor am I tall, but I’ll take it. But then when I asked it to merge the two of us, it didn’t work too well (not that I expected that to work):

It shows local results also:

It will get better over time, but it is nice to see these chat features from Google and Bing get more visual.

Dr. Michio Kaku At Google

Here is a photo from the Google NYC office from a week or so ago where you have Dr. Michio Kaku giving Google Talk at the office there.

Dr. Michio is an American theoretical physicist, futurist, and popularizer of science. He is a professor of theoretical physics in the City College of New York and CUNY Graduate Center.

He was there to talk about his book, Quantum Supremacy: How the Quantum Computer Revolution Will Change Everything.

I found the image on Instagram.

Google Business Profiles Testing Image Slider

Google Maps Pin Business Men On Slide

Google is testing adding an image carousel directly in the business profile panel. So at the top of a business profile listing you see these business images. In this test, you can swipe the images to see more.

This was spotted by Mike who posted a few photos of it in the Local Search Forum. I took those images and made it into a GIF so you can see what it looks like in action:

Mike wrote, “As of this morning I noticed the ability to side scroll the top image/videos in the listings on mobile. Like a carousel.”

Yep, it does look like that.
