Two Google Unconfirmed Updates, Performance Max Experiments & Search Console Data Change

This week we had two unconfirmed updates from Google rollout after the helpful content, and link spam update finished. Google said quality updates could impact crawling and indexing. Google Search Console updated the performance report for product tracking. Google also updated the video indexing report for better error reporting. Google will ignore robots.txt rules if they are served with a 4xx status code. Google said publishing frequency doesn’t make something spam. Google’s John Mueller spoke more about the head section. Google will not make changes to the quote for request indexing in Search Console. Google Ads is rolling out Performance Max experiments. Google Business Profiles is testing adding more details to attributes in local. Google Business Profiles has an image server bug. Google Search is testing moving the order online button to the top. Google has a check local wait times button. Google discontinued Google Posts insights. Google Maps has new posting restrictions for user-generated content. Microsoft Bing is testing topics in the search bar. Google Search dropped podcast snippets in list view. Google Search is testing perspectives and opinions. Microsoft Bing Testing Infinite Scroll

Microsoft Bing is testing infinite scroll just a month after Google fully launched continuous scroll on desktop search. I guess this should come as no surprise that Bing would test this, it does not seem to be live yet, so this is just a test.

Frank Sandtmann posted this on Mastodon and shared the attached screenshot showing how as he scrolled, Bing loaded page two of its search results. Here is that image:

Frank wrote, “Bing is once again following Google in SERP appearance, this time with endless scroll on desktop. They somewhat improved the search experience by displaying the respective page count.”

I do wonder if Bing will ultimately follow suit and launch infinite scroll (or continuous scroll) on its search results.

Google Search Apologizes For Ongoing Issues With Search Results In Preferred Language

Google’s Search Liaison, Danny Sullivan, posted a message on Twitter and other social networks, apologizing for the ongoing issues and complaints with Google showing the preferred language in the search results. Google said the issue seems to be from mobile sites not being properly configured and Google’s mobile-first indexing being more widespread.

Google said, “We appreciate the concern expressed by those seeking results in a preferred language. This is a priority for us to resolve. We will continue to investigate solutions, but we also need time to ensure those work well.” We have not made any recent change in how our systems determine the languages of results to display. However, as we crawl more of the web on a mobile-first basis, issues may arise when we index multilingual content not properly indicating which version we should display.” Our guidance about multilingual content is here. We’re also further checking our own systems to understand potential issues or improvements we can make. Again, we appreciate the concern. It is a priority for us to address.”

DOJ Sues Google Again To Break Up Its Ad Business

The big news out of yesterday was that the US Department of Justice and several states has once again sued Google calling for the breakup of its ad tech business that allegedly monopolizes the US ad market. Google of course does not agree with this action.

Nicole Farley does a really good job explaining all of this on Search Engine Land, plus there is a ton of content written by humans and machines consolidated at Techmeme, so check that out. I personally hate covering legal news but my gut, this lawsuit will make a big dent in Google – although, it will likely drag out for a while.

Bloomberg wrote, “The lawsuit we have filed today seeks to hold Google to account for what we allege are its longstanding monopolies in digital advertising technologies that content creators use to sell ads and advertisers use to buy ads on the open Internet,” said the Justice Department’s antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter in a news conference Tuesday announcing the suit.”

Google responds, DOJ is doubling down on a flawed argument that would slow innovation, raise advertising fees and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to grow. We’ve already responded in detail to many similar claims made in the complaint led by the Texas Attorney General.”

Here is the DOJ statement that says, “As alleged in the complaint, over the past 15 years, Google has engaged in a course of anticompetitive and exclusionary conduct that consisted of neutralizing or eliminating ad tech competitors through acquisitions; wielding its dominance across digital advertising markets to force more publishers and advertisers to use its products; and thwarting the ability to use competing products. In doing so, Google cemented its dominance in tools relied on by website publishers and online advertisers, as well as the digital advertising exchange that runs ad auctions.”

Didn’t this happen before? Yes, the DOJ previously sued Google in 2020 for this as well.
